Lush caribean coast, Limón

Caribbean coast, Limón, can be described in one word: lush. This province is home for 9% of the country’s population, and its personality is marked by customs inherited from the Antilles.

One of the most important province’s cities is Puerto Limón. Here, many residents have Afro-Caribbean ancestry, so Limon provides a culture-rich experience. Also, the museums, attractions for travelers, and the architecture make the area unique.

The climate in Limón can be a little bit overwhelming because of the heat and humidity, but the unparalleled landscapes deserve any effort. To the north of the province is Tortuguero National Park that protects the nest of Hawksbill and Green sea turtles that nest along the beach. The best way to explore Tortuguero is in its water channels. Travelers can hop on a boat or even go kayaking or canoeing to get the best view of wildlife in this park that includes mammals like West Indian manatee, monkeys, aviary species, and reptiles.

In the south of the province is Cahuita National Park that features roughly 55,000 acres of protected waters and 600 acres of living coral reef. It is one of my favorite places for its astounding white sand beaches and calm waters. In the forest, next to the beach, there are howler and capuchin monkeys, sloths, coatis, iguanas, raccoons, in short, an abundant fauna. Also paradisiacal are the beaches of the national wildlife refuge Gandoca-Manzanillo. In the beaches at the south Limón are available activities like snorkeling, swimming, canoeing, and scuba diving, ideal to appreciate aquatic wildlife, including 35 species of coral and 400 species of fish.
